St. Luke’s Joins AIDS Memorial

Join us on Sat. May 16 for the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial to increase AIDS awareness.

The Global Network of People living with HIV is coordinating the worldwide memorial; locally, the Southwest Action Group (SWAG) is spearheading the event. One of our partners, the NM Dept. of Health (DOH) is joining SWAG and so are we. DOH provides harm reduction services with HIV testing and AIDS information during St. Luke’s Café Salud, our weekly homeless outreach clinic – a service we greatly appreciate.

SWAG is an inter-agency collaborative composed of NM DOH, Alianza of NM, Families & Youth, Inc. (also our partners) and International AIDS Empowerment that works on HIV/STD prevention in Las Cruces and the southwest region of NM. Recent data shows 166 people in our region are living with HIV/AIDS; statewide there are about 2,900 people.

The memorial is one of the oldest and largest grassroots mobilization campaigns for HIV awareness in the world with about 1,200 community organizations in 115 countries leading the efforts. However, it is much more than just a memorial. With 33 million people living with HIV today, the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial serves as an important intervention for global solidarity, breaking down barriers of stigma and discrimination, and giving hope to new generations.

We will be at the First Christian Church, 1809 El Paseo Road in Las Cruces, from 7-9:00 pm on Sat. The event is free and open to the public. See you there!
